Sabemos que las iniciativas que son dirigidas por comunidades tienen posibilidades inmensas de lograr impactos positivos. Sin embargo, hasta ahora, no ha habido suficiente financiaci\u00f3n competitiva para programas que aborden cuestiones marinas y se enfoquen espec\u00edficamente en llegar a comunidades locales y organizaciones locales.

Aunque el 10% de la poblaci\u00f3n mundial depende sustancialmente de los beneficios en t\u00e9rminos econ\u00f3micos, de nutrici\u00f3n y de protecci\u00f3n costera asociados con los oc\u00e9anos y que estos contribuyen USD\u00a01,5\u00a0billones a la econom\u00eda global, menos del 1% (USD\u00a013.000 millones) de este valor total se invirti\u00f3 en la econom\u00eda oce\u00e1nica a trav\u00e9s de proyectos sostenibles durante el \u00faltimo decenio.
