Esto ha amenazado la biodiversidad marina y ha aumentado la presi\u00f3n sobre los arrecifes de coral para que proporcionen alimentos e ingresos a las comunidades costeras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En casi todas las zonas pobladas, los propietarios tradicionales informan ahora de la disminuci\u00f3n de las poblaciones de peces y otros productos marinos vendibles, como las almejas gigantes y los pepinos de mar. Muchas comunidades isle\u00f1as de la provincia de Milne Bay est\u00e1n muy alejadas y la poblaci\u00f3n local lleva un estilo de vida principalmente de subsistencia, sin electricidad, sin agua corriente y con suministros m\u00e9dicos extremadamente limitados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para hacer frente a estos retos, el proyecto apoya a las comunidades locales para que creen y gestionen sus propias zonas marinas protegidas, mejorando as\u00ed la sostenibilidad de su pesca artesanal. Tambi\u00e9n capacita a las mujeres locales para que participen en la conservaci\u00f3n marina y presta ayuda esencial para contribuir a mejorar la salud y el bienestar de la comunidad, especialmente de las mujeres y los ni\u00f1os.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De cara al futuro, el proyecto aumentar\u00e1 la asistencia ofrecida a las comunidades costeras asociadas y acelerar\u00e1 la creaci\u00f3n de \u00c1reas Marinas Localmente Gestionadas (LMMA) que apoyen la pesca sostenible, protejan los arrecifes y creen oportunidades para el ecoturismo.
