Sin embargo, estas islas \u00fanicas est\u00e1n amenazadas por la urbanizaci\u00f3n, el cambio clim\u00e1tico y, sobre todo, por el creciente volumen de contaminaci\u00f3n pl\u00e1stica, especialmente en Lamu Este, una zona remota del archipi\u00e9lago. Los aparejos de pesca abandonados da\u00f1an las praderas marinas y los arrecifes de coral, y los residuos pl\u00e1sticos mal gestionados bloquean los canales de marea de los manglares, provocando la muerte de los \u00e1rboles. Adem\u00e1s, la comunidad de Lamu Este queda vulnerable debido a la reducci\u00f3n de las poblaciones de peces, la ingesti\u00f3n de micropl\u00e1sticos a trav\u00e9s de los mariscos y el aumento de la pobreza.   <\/p>\n\n<p>El proyecto apoya a la comunidad de Lamu Este, de unas 22.000 personas, mediante incentivos en met\u00e1lico para la recuperaci\u00f3n de pl\u00e1sticos, con fondos que fluyen directamente a los hogares, con medidas para garantizar la igualdad de g\u00e9nero y la inclusi\u00f3n social. Por ejemplo, el proyecto est\u00e1 trabajando para garantizar que m\u00e1s de la mitad de sus recolectores de residuos pl\u00e1sticos sean mujeres. Al mismo tiempo, se apoyan las voces femeninas en los procesos de toma de decisiones, garantizando que los beneficios resultantes lleguen a mujeres y ni\u00f1as.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Se apoyar\u00e1 a las Unidades de Gesti\u00f3n de Playas (BMU) para que se conviertan en estaciones de recuperaci\u00f3n y tr\u00e1nsito de pl\u00e1sticos integradas en un modelo circular de gesti\u00f3n de residuos.
