A polui\u00e7\u00e3o por pl\u00e1sticos n\u00e3o \u00e9 apenas uma quest\u00e3o ambiental, mas tamb\u00e9m um problema crescente de sa\u00fade p\u00fablica. A altera\u00e7\u00e3o dos padr\u00f5es de consumo fez aumentar os res\u00edduos de pl\u00e1stico para 538 kg por dia em Banda e 958 kg por dia em Lease, respetivamente. As lixeiras tornam-se locais de reprodu\u00e7\u00e3o de doen\u00e7as e a queima de res\u00edduos liberta poluentes atmosf\u00e9ricos nocivos que afectam a sa\u00fade da comunidade. Apenas cerca de 29% destes res\u00edduos s\u00e3o recolhidos e, mesmo assim, muitas vezes s\u00e3o mal geridos. Cerca de 35% dos res\u00edduos s\u00e3o lan\u00e7ados no ambiente, constituindo uma s\u00e9ria amea\u00e7a \u00e0 sustentabilidade dos ecossistemas marinhos e ao bem-estar humano.     <\/p>\n\n<p>O projeto est\u00e1 a trabalhar com a gest\u00e3o de res\u00edduos das aldeias das ilhas para expandir e melhorar os servi\u00e7os de recolha de res\u00edduos.
