The Details

Supporting waste management in Beach Management Units

The remote Lamu Archipelago has become a significant accumulation ground for marine plastic pollution from across the Indian Ocean, and the issue is compounded by a lack of waste management services. This project enables Beach Management Units (BMUs) to become plastic recovery and transit stations integrated into a circular waste management model serving a population of 40,000 across the Archipelago. In addition to improving livelihoods while generating income for deprived fishery-dependent communities, the project will empower BMUs to fulfil their government mandate as active enforcers of marine conservation. Activities include training in governance, strategy, and financial management; protecting fish nurseries; reducing and raising awareness of illegal and unsustainable fishing practices; community scholarships and savings programs, and fishing gear swaps.
